cbt for emetophobia

Emetophobia

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective treatments for emetophobia (the fear of vomiting). Together, we explore how the fear has developed and what keeps it going, including anxious thoughts, physical sensations, and the things you do to try to feel safe.

Many people with emetophobia find themselves avoiding certain foods, restaurants, public transport, school, social events, holidays, or being around people who are unwell. Some carry anti-sickness medication, constantly check food expiry dates, seek reassurance, or leave situations if they feel anxious or nauseous. Although these strategies can bring short-term relief, they often make the fear feel bigger over time.

CBT helps you understand this cycle and build confidence in your ability to cope, rather than relying on avoidance.

How I can help

A key part of CBT for emetophobia is gradually facing fears in a safe, supported, and manageable way. We create a personalised fear hierarchy together, starting with situations that feel only slightly challenging before moving on to those that feel more difficult. For example, this might begin with saying or writing the word “vomit,” looking at simple images, watching short video clips, eating foods you have been avoiding, travelling on public transport, or spending time in situations that you have been avoiding because of the fear of sickness.

There is never any pressure to move faster than you are comfortable, and exposure is always collaborative and tailored to your needs.

As a neuro-affirming therapist, I also adapt therapy to fit your individual strengths, sensory preferences, and way of processing the world, creating a supportive environment where you can build confidence at your own pace.
